Pre-Installation Preparation

For proper erosion control, it’s critical to set the fences along the contour of slopes. We use surveying equipment to delineate the contours prior to installation. This step ensures the fencing follows the subtle elevation changes rather than running straight up and down.

Fence Post Installation

We dig deep, sturdy post holes and set specialized steel or wooden fence posts at the spacing dictated by the plan. The end, corner, and gate posts are set in concrete to anchor them firmly in place. They must withstand the force of flowing stormwater without leaning or shifting.

For areas with highly erodible soils, we use self-supporting posts that don’t need concrete. This allows water to flow freely under the fence rather than pooling and destructive scouring the soil at the base.

Attaching Filter Fabric

Once the fence posts are installed, we securely fasten the filter fabric to them using heavy-duty nylon ties. The fabric is made of high-density polyethylene, galvanized welded wire, coir, or jute mesh. We select the optimal fabric based on site conditions and client preferences regarding appearance and sustainability.

The bottom 12-18” of fabric is buried underground and backfilled to prevent water flowing underneath. The top is stretched tightly between posts and fastened securely. No gaps can remain that would allow water intrusion and soil erosion.

Runoff Drain Installation

In areas where water tends to pool against the fence, we install drainage pipes or rock-filled trenches. These relieve the hydraulic pressure on the fence and provide channels for controlled water flow offsite. Drainage ways are angled to work with the natural contours and drain water to safe outlets.

Gates

Any access points are completed with gates using hinges, latches, and diagonal cross-bracing. This allows maintenance crews, wildlife, or livestock to pass through while still controlling water flow. Gate posts are set in concrete just like the end and corner posts.

Final Inspection

Once installation is complete, we walk the fence line in its entirety. We check for any weak points, gaps, malfunctions with gates, or areas needing adjustment. The fence must function flawlessly to prevent erosion, so we confirm everything is perfect before calling the job done.
